This term focuses on equipping students with the skills to gather, interpret, and analyse data — critical skills that will support them both in mathematics and in everyday problem-solving. Core number operations will also be refreshed to ensure fluency.

Outcome: By the end of Term 1, students will be able to interpret various forms of data and apply fundamental mathematical operations with confidence.

Numbers, Operations & Fractions

This term focuses on reinforcing foundational concepts in number operations and introducing fractions and decimals. Students will develop mental math strategies and strengthen their understanding of number patterns.

Understanding place value and working with large numbers
Mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Estimation techniques and identifying number patterns
Introduction to fractions, including identification, comparison, and conversion
Introduction to decimals

Outcome: Students will gain fluency in number operations and will be able to confidently work with fractions and decimals in various contexts.

Measurement & 2D Geometry

In this term, students will apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world contexts, such as measurement and geometry. They will develop skills in calculating and classifying shapes, as well as understanding geometric properties and relationships.

Working with percentages and operations involving decimals and fractions

Calculating the perimeter and area of 2D shapes
Understanding the Cartesian plane and its applications

Outcome: By the end of Term 3, students will be able to measure angles, calculate areas, and work confidently with 2D shapes.

3D Shapes, Measurement & Time

Term 4 (Jul – Sept): 3D Shapes, Measurement & Time

The final term dives deeper into advanced measurement concepts, 3D structures, and time management. Students will learn to apply their knowledge to multi-step problems, preparing them for more complex mathematical tasks.

Exploring 3D objects and spatial reasoning
Measuring volume, mass, and capacity
Working with 12-hour and 24-hour time
Reviewing and consolidating key concepts from earlier terms
Solving worded problems with a focus on application
