Term-by-Term Outline

Common Module & Close Study of Literature (Oct–Dec)

This foundational term introduces students to the English Standard course structure. Emphasis is placed on the Common Module and Close Study of Literature, with students learning to read texts closely, analyse themes, and write with precision.

  • Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences – Exploring universal themes and character journeys

  • Close Study of Literature – Analysing prescribed texts in depth for meaning, purpose, and stylistic features

  • Essay writing techniques – Structuring analytical responses, refining clarity and cohesion

Outcome:
Students will develop confidence in interpreting complex texts and expressing their ideas through well-structured essays, setting a solid foundation for Year 12 English.

Module A – Language, Identity & Culture (Feb–Apr)

This term explores how language constructs identity and reflects cultural values. Students will examine a range of texts and compose analytical and discursive responses that explore how language shapes our view of the world.

  • Analysing texts across media, fiction, and nonfiction to uncover social and cultural perspectives

  • Constructing arguments with clarity and textual evidence

  • Preparing for HSC-style responses, including short answers and extended essays

Outcome:
Students will write persuasive, nuanced essays that reflect a deep understanding of how language shapes identity and conveys cultural meaning.

Module C – The Craft of Writing (Apr–Jun)

This term focuses on developing students’ voice through imaginative, persuasive, and discursive writing. Emphasis is placed on refining technique, style, and originality.

  • Writing across modes: discursive, persuasive, and imaginative compositions

  • Analysing model texts to understand stylistic devices and language techniques

  • Timed writing drills and redrafting practice with feedback

Outcome:
Students will refine their ability to craft compelling responses across a variety of styles, enhancing both creative and analytical expression in preparation for exams.

HSC Exam Preparation & Mock Exams (Jul–Sept)

In the final term, students consolidate their learning through targeted revision and mock exams. The focus is on mastering timing, structure, and strategic approaches to each exam section.

  • Simulated full-length exams under HSC conditions
